Newer Apple devices save photos in a format called HEIC (High Efficiency Image Coding).
In order to open these files on a Windows 10 machine, the necessary codecs must be installed first.
You must be running Windows 10 version 1809 or later.
First, you will need to download and install the HEIF codec from the Microsoft store here:

Second, download the HEVC codec:
