Requirements Check
Before proceeding make sure that you meet the requirements for performing the Windows 11 In-place upgrade.
- Your computer must be physically on a DMACC campus.
- Work is underway to support remote employees, but as of early July 2025. Availability is anticipated by the end of July.
- If upgrading a DMACC laptop, connect it to a dock or ensure it’s plugged into power and a wired network.
- The upgrade will not start if you are on battery power or only using a Wi-Fi connection
- Set aside a minimum of 2.5 hours hours where you won’t need your computer
- Upgrades rarely exceed 2.5 hours, but it can happen. If you are concerned about the status of your update please contact Tech Support at 515-965-7300.
Start The Upgrade

Open Software Center
Find Software Center in the Windows Start Menu. It provides access to DMACC-approved software and system upgrades.
TIP: Press the Windows key on your keyboard and type 'Software Center' to find it quickly.

Locate the Upgrade
Navigate to the Operating Systems section. Look for Windows 11 In-place Upgrade.

Start the Upgrade
Click the blue Install button. A confirmation prompt will appear. Confirm it to begin the upgrade. See the screenshots below for guidance.


OK, The Upgrade Started Now What?
The upgrade is automated but may fail within the first 10 minutes in certain cases:
- Your computer doesn't meet the minimum requirements for Windows 11.
- Your device model hasn't been validated for the upgrade.
If you do run into a failure, please create a support ticket.
Post Upgrade Configuration
Please note: After the upgrade is complete, your first login will take slightly longer than usual.
After logging in, we recommend completing the following tasks if they weren’t done before the upgrade:
- Configure OneDrive
- A setup wizard will guide you through the process.
- Your Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders will automatically sync to OneDrive, making it easy to move between your workspace and the classroom.
- Configure browser sync for your favorite web browser(s)
- Microsoft Edge
- Google Chrome
- Mozilla Firefox
Optional Customizations
Windows Start Menu
Windows 11 moves the Start Menu from the lower-left corner to the center of the taskbar. To restore it to the traditional position, refer to the knowledge base article: How to Move the Start Menu to the Left (like Windows 10)
